The Lipetsk region is formed on the 6th of January of 1954.
Location
It is situated in the central part of the European territory of Russia on crossing of the major transport highways of the country, in 400 km on the south from Moscow. The Lipetsk region borders with Voronezh, Kursk, Oryol, Tula, Ryazan, Tambov regions.
The region's territory – 24.1 thousand sq km
Extent of area:
From the north to the south - 200 km.
From the west to the east - 150 km.
General extent of borders - 900 km.
The climate is moderately - continental with moderately cold winter and warm summer.
The population of the region is 1163 thousand.
In compliance with the current local self-governance laws the region has 328 municipalities divided into 18 districts and 2 cities (Lipetsk and Elets), 6 urban settlements and 302 village councils.
Lipetsk is an administrative, industrial, cultural and resort centre of the region
Elets is an ancient city with a heroic history, rich spiritual and cultural traditions. Has the developed industry.
Gryazy is a crossroads of large railways from the north to the south and from the west to the east, providing access to the markets of the central and remote regions of Russia and the countries of the CIS.
Zadonsk is one of the monastery centres of Chernozem region, inextricably related with a name of prelate Tihon Zadonskiy.
Land and raw materials
Prevailing types of soil are chernozems, which occupy more than 85 per cent of all territory.
300 deposits submit minerals of area: limestones, dolomites, sand, clay, cement raw materials. The region occupies the first place in the Russian Federation on stocks of carbonate raw material. Deposits of peat are significant. Lipetsk mineral sources and the medical dirt, which was found in 1871, are very popular in the country.
